I was Shortlisted for A Group Mentoring Session with Ibukun Awosika. Here's What I Learnt.

Today I attended a group mentoring session called The Life Series with Ibukun Awosika. Mrs. Ibukun Awosika is a forerunner in the furniture manufacturing business in Nigeria and the current chairperson of First Bank of Nigeria Plc. Also speaking at the event were Mr. Asue Ighodalo (the chairman of Sterling Bank Plc.) and Mr. Sola Adepetun (the chairman of Standard Chartered Bank Plc.). Below I share a few nuggets from today’s meeting so that I don’t forget them and because someone else might find them useful as well.  I have highlighted my favourite nuggets in bold letters.

1.       It is within your power to write your story regardless of the circumstances of your birth.   You did not choose your parents but you get to decide how your story ends.

2.    The things you do in your past will show up in your future so be mindful of the choices you make.

3.       Life is always a test of character so before the test comes, be sure of your value system. 


4.       Life will always throw you curve balls and this is usually an opportunity for growth.



5.       Don’t let anyone tell you that you have failed in life until after you die.


6.       Reset your mind. If today does not work, tomorrow will.

7.       Delayed gratification is not punishment, it is wisdom. 

8.       Spend time with your God on a daily basis.

9.       Show up for others when they need you.


10.   Whatever work you do, strive to be the best.



11.   Be clear about what you want. 


12.   Be nice and courteous to people. There’s always a network of “mouth-power” speaking for you in places you do not have access to. 



13.   Give people the opportunity to keep their self-worth. 


14.   If you are good at giving, you will always get. 



15.   The kinds of friends you keep, determine how fast you move in life. 


16.   If you are friends with someone because of what you can get from them, that’s not friendship. That’s a transaction. 



17.   You earn your stripes by what you do every day. 


18.   If you earn a million dollars, always treat it like a once in a lifetime opportunity. Don’t blow it.

19.   Decide what you want to be known for and begin to make a name for yourself. 


20.   Any business that offers gains without measure will also bring losses without measure. 


21.   It is your responsibility to plan your career, not your employer’s. 



22.   In the workplace, always lead by example.

I really want you to watch Stephen Dunier's Ted talk, How to Achieve Your Most Ambitious Goals. That's the essence of this blog post in a nutshell.  His Ted talk is actually one of the most important items on my motivational playlist because it reminds me that putting time into work, pays off in the long run. He specifically alluded to the fact that little drops of water make a mighty ocean. That is, even if you spend little time on a task, as long as you are consistent, and you make marginal improvements over time,  you'd achieve your goal.   Again, his strategy is simple. Break down a project into small manageable tasks that you can complete in 20 minutes and once the allotted time is up, you take a break. After which you come back to do some more work which could even be on another project. IMAGINE MESSING UP A BIG BREAK, YUP THAT HAPPENED TO ME ONCE. HERE'S WHAT I LEARNT!

A few years ago, I did a styling gig for a major boutique brand in Lagos and it flopped! The next day I couldn't get out of bed because I could not believe how bad I messed up.   After that incident, I took a break from fashion styling for about six months. I would have quit for good if not for my fashion designer sister who asked me to style her summer collection a few months later. The summer collection went on to be a hit and I've continued styling since then.  We have all experienced setbacks before. At work, at home, and in our various relationships. I've had my fair share as well.  However, being unable to accept the fact that something unbecoming happened to us, is the worst thing we can do to ourselves.  No one is promised a life free of adversity or challenges. So being in denial of our shortcomings would prevent us from growing. Looking back, I realize that I couldn't deal with the embarrassment of failing even after I had taken responsibility for my work.  Ho

BG REACTIONS: THE SILHOUETTE CHALLENGE

I really love the silhouette challenge. Maybe I'm a low-key bad boy. But I know for certain that I'm not alone here. Despite the fact that the challenge has been met with so much backlash from men and women, more and more people are participating. The silhouette challenge basically involves one switching from a robe or PJ into lingerie while dancing to Paul Anka's "Put Your Head On my Shoulder". The Silhouette is created by a crimson red Snap Chat filter available on the mobile App.  Why is this challenge bursting my head?  1. It's the fact that a song from 1959 makes a come back in the year 2021! Up until yesterday, I had never heard of a Paul Anka. It's also very heartwarming that he's alive to experience all of this. And really, from the looks of Paul's website, it seems the old man is also going with the flow.  "Life is Short, Art is long" is something I say a lot.
