DON'T CHASE OTHERS TO DO THE THINGS YOU CAN DO FOR YOURSELF

Learning to be independent is a continuous process for me. And I am broadly referring to independence as it relates to the various parts of our lives. You can be very independent at work and this might not necessarily be the case on the home front. It's important to know that if there is no one around you, you can take care of yourself.  Emotional independence is important because when it comes to dating, you have to be a whole person without someone else being around you. You must be able to enjoy your own company. That way you can ask yourself important questions like why is this person in my life?  So, what I am highlighting here is the fact that our relationships have to go beyond the mindset of "so that they wouldn't say I don't have anybody" Financial independence is being able to meet your needs. It really does not matter how much you earn. What matters is that you are not at the mercy of money.  Relying on other people excessively can be detrimental to our

THERE IS A WAY TO BE GOOD AGAIN...

Image
"There is a way to be good again" is one of my favorite quotes to date and it's from the book The Kite Runner which I highly recommend that you read. The quote essentially means that we can always get back on track no matter how far we have gone off the tracks.  In the kite runner, Amir witnesses his housekeeper's son Hassan get raped over a kite. Soon, he starts to develop guilt for not intervening in the incident and resorts to framing Hassan's father for theft in order to get him fired from his job as their housekeeper- his plans work.  Soon after, Amir's family flees to the United States due to the Insurgency in their country. Many years later, he finds out that Hassan was actually his half brother! By this time, Hassan has been killed by the same boy (now a terrorist leader) who raped him as a child, and the same terrorist leader is now serially molesting Hassan's surviving heir.  As an act of redemption,  Amir decides to go back to Pakistan to rescue

5 POWERFUL WAYS TO IMPROVE YOUR SELF DISCIPLINE

Image
Discipline is such an important trait to develop. Often times, it is what separates professionals from dilettantes. It really is the currency of super-achievers and without some level of self-discipline, you cannot achieve much in life. Below are my top five tips for developing self-discipline. 1. Do Something You Enjoy. I have learned that it is easier to stay consistent at something you enjoy. There is this idea that humans are always seeking the path of least resistance. So, it might be less difficult to develop self-discipline if you engage in an activity that comes naturally to you. Otherwise, find something meaningful to you, even if you don't like the activity. For example, I am learning French on Duolingo and it is not something I particularly enjoy doing. But I understand the significance of learning a second language to having a global career, so I just keep at it.  2. Be a Part of a Community:  I strongly believe that self-discipline can be fueled by interactions with ot

CREATIVE MUSING: THE FAT LADY SINGS

Image
Like other nights before any big day, I can't fall asleep; excitement and anxiety wouldn't let me. I heave a deep sigh and reach for my transistor radio to tune into a station still playing some music at 3 a.m.  My only sister is fast asleep next to me and, honest to God, she snores like a camel- I fight the urge to poke her, to scold her for sleeping anyhow. I love my sister now but this wasn't always the case growing up.  I called her "BBC" because she was so nosy; always telling our parents what I said or did wrong in their absence.  "Mummy, guess what! Fadekemi's teacher beat her today because she didn't do her homework and she was crying like a baby."  My mum would look at me with piercing eyes and ask if Remi was telling the truth.  No matter what I said, the scene always closed with my mum hitting me with whatever object was within her reach.  I am 50 today and in a few hours, there will be loud music and lots of food. There wi

THIS NURSERY RHYME CAN HELP YOU MASTER YOUR CRAFT

Image
It was Lisa Nichols who said that "your life will change in needlepoint movements." What this means, in my opinion, is that there is really no such thing as an overnight success. We are an accumulation of our daily practices. There's a nursery rhyme from when I was little which comes to mind often these days: "Little drops of water. Little grains of sand make a mighty ocean and pleasant land." The other part of that rhyme actually notes the power of time: "Thus the little minutes, humble though they be; make the mighty ages of eternity. " The point is that numbers matter in the grand scheme of things; specifically the number of days you spend working on your craft.  Your life will not change because you went to one seminar. Or because you ran one 10 km race or worked out at the gym for 2 hours. Little things done consistently over time can bring about huge results. When I look at my life: working towards becoming a content creator, trying
