BG REACTIONS: THE SILHOUETTE CHALLENGE

Image
I really love the silhouette challenge. Maybe I'm a low-key bad boy. But I know for certain that I'm not alone here. Despite the fact that the challenge has been met with so much backlash from men and women, more and more people are participating. The silhouette challenge basically involves one switching from a robe or PJ into lingerie while dancing to Paul Anka's "Put Your Head On my Shoulder". The Silhouette is created by a crimson red Snap Chat filter available on the mobile App.  Why is this challenge bursting my head?  1. It's the fact that a song from 1959 makes a come back in the year 2021! Up until yesterday, I had never heard of a Paul Anka. It's also very heartwarming that he's alive to experience all of this. And really, from the looks of Paul's website, it seems the old man is also going with the flow.  "Life is Short, Art is long" is something I say a lot. And I know for certain, that art never really goes away. It is always

I HAD SIX ZOOM MEETINGS WITH THE CHAIRPERSON OF FIRST BANK OF NIGERIA. HERE'S WHAT I LEARNED

Signing up for Mrs. Ibukun Awosika's "Life Series with Ibukun Awosika" was one of the most important decisions I made in 2020;  for real. It was a paid event (although just a token) and it was a birthday gift to myself. I've blogged about the insights I got from listening to the speakers that day but I had no idea that Mrs. Awosika was going to gather all the attendees into a Bootcamp and coach us for 7 weeks.  So, for almost two months over Whatsapp and Zoom, we were engaged by the Life series team: Assignments for the week (due every Wednesday, otherwise you were cut from the Bootcamp) and Sunday sessions with Mrs. Ibukun where we literally could ask any questions.  We heard from a woman who had summoned the courage to leave a good job in Lagos for studies abroad despite having a newborn, to another person, who was struggling with the fact that she had just being made appointed a leader.  There were so many aha moments for me. These were probably not the best less

FRESH GRAD? HERE'S HOW TO LAND A JOB WITH A GOOD PAY IN LAGOS

Image
Dear Fresh Grads,  I know you might be apprehensive about what the future holds for you. Relax. Everything will be OK, eventually. You'd figure it out, including how to land your first job.  It has almost been a decade since I left Uni. and what I know for sure is that these tips below will help you get a job or get a better job. Enjoy.  1. Use Your Network or Your Extended Network.  Everywhere in the world, networking is important. In fact, it is a cardinal tool for getting your first job and climbing up the professional ladder. In my opinion, use your network but don't depend on your network. You should be looking out for people who can land you interviews or provide you information about job openings:  1. Your parents, siblings, uncles, and aunties.  2. Your former classmates from Uni.  3. Friends from the gym, volunteer organizations, and other social groups.  4. Linkedin.  2. Your grades.  Yes, your university degree matters. Most organizations will only accept applicati

HOW DO YOU MEASURE YOUR WINS

Image
Photo by  Samuel Silitonga  from  Pexels I'm always looking ahead; trying to get better and do better; and I believe there are so many young people in the world today like me who are either learning a new skill,  a new language or engaged in one educational pursuit or the other. And the side effect of always looking forward is never taking time to look to the past.  It is important to remember our wins often because they remind us that we are capable, especially when life circumstances try to tell us otherwise. Personally, I believe that when we achieve something, we move our lives forward and we must never take this fact for granted.  Most of us think of wins in terms of big achievements and to be honest, our own successes might look pale in comparison to the things we see in places like Linkedin and Instagram. However, it's really a question of personal self-worth; whether or not we believe our own wins matter, however "small" they are. So how should we measure our

HOW TO LIVE WHOLEHEARTEDLY IN 2021

Image
My biggest challenge is being able to live life fully; being able to experience life and make decisions without fear of what people will think about my choices. I'm referring to this idea of living on one's terms.  You might be asking why I care about what other people think about me. The truth is that to a considerable extent. I don't care, but I also understand that my choices could affect how much support I get back from society. The term social influence refers to the ways in which we alter our behavior according to the demands of society and society actually rewards conformity.  For example, an openly queer person in Nigeria risks being jailed or being a victim of hate-related crimes.  The need for conformity is also the reason an individual wearing dreadlocks or having a visible tattoo is perceived as a criminal by the Nigeria Police.  So for me, to live on my terms is being able to pursue the things I love without someone noting that I'm being too much, doing too
