How To Stay Focused When Everything Is going Wrong

I've had a rough couple of days. My car broke down on Monday and I've had to spend a lot more money than I budgeted on repairs and other family expenses. So, I understand that it might be difficult to muster the courage to make lemonade when life hands us lemons.

However, I know for sure that regardless of the hand that we are dealt,  we are responsible for our actions or reactions. No excuses.

The following tips could help you set your mind right and get your focus back.

1. Have a Plan.

Having a to-do list is one of the most important productivity hacks out there. When things are difficult, it might be hard to pick a task and begin work on it because you are nursing the pain of whatever is going on and thinking about the other things you are yet to work on. Writing things down is actually deligating the mental work of remembering to a sheet of paper.

Call to Action: Write everything you have to do down and start with the easiest for you to do.

2. Sleep.

Take a nap. Sleep is not only good for physical exhaustion. It could help with emotional stress too. You could take a power nap for about 20 minutes before getting back to work.

3. Recognize that time files.

Whether or not you choose to get back at that important task, time is going. If you have the opportunity to work on something right now, don't wait till tomorrow.

4. Try Coffee. Then Eat something. Caffeine will help improve mental alertness. However, don't take coffee after 3pm if you have problems falling or staying asleep at night.  Having your coffee with some biscuits or cookies will make you feel good because the sugar in the cookies will cause the brain to release dopamine, the "happy hormone". Still, don't overdo it with sugar especially if you are diabetic or trying to lose weight.

5. Create a Learning Space you Love.

Organize your place in such a  way that you are motivated to work. For example, I prefer to have my work desk facing a space rather than against the wall. This way I can occasionally admire the decor of the space.

6. Accept that Sh*t Happens.

At the end of the day, we have to gain perspective because there will always be bad days. The prayer though is that the good days by far outnumber the bad ones.

This is why this Mattie Stepanek's quote, "remember to play after every storm", is one of my favorites. It's a call to celebrate the good times and endure the bad.

Last words: try your best not to stay down when life hits hard because the credit always belongs to the man who never gives up. Thanks for reading.
